In honor of 22 years, I had to post this and share it with today’s generation. I don’t think they’ve seen close clean racing like this. I privileged to have witnessed when it happened and I continue to watch it and celebrate it regularly. Thank you to Troy and Colin! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Nearly 100,000 people there watching that race it's such a shame that world superbike doesn't get that same crowds and coverage it used too. Motorcycle racing was the best during the mid 90s to early 2000s, so many great riders during that era
Yes its a shame. To be fair though racing in general has declined in terms of viewership and spectatorship since the 90's/2000's. Besides F1, motorracing is almost a niche on the fringes of the mainstream now. Rally decline from the group b days, touring car decline from the supertouring days, the list goes on. Motorsport directors/heads need to look at some rules/changes/competitions they can make/create to get more quality entertainment like this back on the track and pull in more fans!
i was super lucky to watch this live on TV as it happened almost 20 yrs back - to date i have NEVER seen a more thrilling race, not in WSBK, MotoGP, F1, or any other series i follow - what a treat !!! - undoubtedly the greatest most exciting motorsports race i've ever watched
I watched this live and it still is fantastic. Where has that time gone?! The last time WSBK was truly great. It has lost some of it's magic since then.
Racing has lost it's magic in general. But it's not because racing has changed (except from F1). Rally and motorcycle racing is still the same, but they receive less coverage. Another issue is that people don't have the money to go watch racing anymore.
true classic. seeing two of the fiercest competeters battle it out on the track, and then to see them together at the end... brilliant riders and truly great sportsmen.
I forgot what a humdinger ending to the 2002 SBK season that race was.... Definitely one that'll forever be a legendary one in history... Gotta love old school SBK....
About commentators, haven't seen any comments, that may be my fault, but would have liked to hear Huewen/Ryder as in my oppinion they were the best duo. Appart from them Burnicle/Witham was a pretty good ensamble, keep in mind as voices go Jack Burnicle is my favourite,(thanks a lot for the good memories) but well done Parrish/Cox, this one makes for good memories, i would like to see the entire season as a documentary or full races even, as in my oppinion these were the best races i ever seen. Thanks a lot to the commentators again, you're voices made the races a true spectacle, and the show much more enjoyable.
The season was insane, Bayliss and Edwards won 25 of the 26 races and Tamada won the other one at Sugo. All Edwards could do was finish 2nd until the updates after the Suzuka 8h and Bayliss couldn't stop him after. Two of the greatest SBK riders of their generation head to head all season :D
Has to be rated as one of the best races ever. Even the commentators were brilliant. Good to see my hero Ruben Xaus giving it the full beans. Have to watch the race again, so much better than 2019 WSBK and I think 2020 if it ever gets going. Hats off to Bayliss and Edwards, true gladiators
What a race!! What a bikes, zero electronics....only engine, courage and right wrist!! What a riders!! Then the bike's sounds are amazing!! This was the REAL SBK!!!
Everyone thinks Rossi invented the “Doctors Dangle” - hanging your leg off the bike when braking to help keep the weight further back on reduce rear wheel lift... Nope!! Watch Xaus in this race. He was doing this in 2002 already 👍🏼
@@muhammadfarhan581 Well aware. Kevin didn't "dangle" he took his foot completely off the left peg to adjust its position after downshifting. No one else was doing that, they just slid their foot back, so Schwantz looked weird at the time. Schwantz is also Vale's idol and Vale started doing it in 500's to emulate his hero. Watch Rossi in 250's and he doesn't do it.
Thank you for this! This race is basically the very best that motorsport has to offer! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Two great champions on amazing bikes, on an historic Italian circuit under sunny skies in front of adoring, appreciative fans... Bellissimo!!
Agree with all the positive comments here. Was lucky to be at Laguna Seca when everyone saw the fire in Edwards eyes after race one. Respectful, handlebar banging racing. No kicking your competitor off the track, like you know who. Immense respect for Colin and Troy.
Wow. SBK classic races. I like Hockenheim race 2 in 2000 , same year Kyalami . Donington ,Philip Island 98. Laguna Seca 2000/98 and all races Haga did the show
Questi erano i veri piloti, adesso Rea sarebbe stato ultimo. Grandi campioni che lottavano in molti in pista. Sono stati bravissimi. Questa è stata la gara più bella della SBK.
the issue is that WSBK and MotoGP are just so close now that they became rivals. when WSBK bikes were derivated from road it was like a ramp for MotoGP. similar to Moto2 or CRT. now WSBK bikes are so full of tech and far from road origins that the displacement is the same, power is almost the same. the only difference is WSBK bikes are done with ultra high end aftermarket parts and MotoGP bikes are prototypes. but in the end, lap times are pretty close. DORNA took over WSBK to put a stop between them and to force top teams to feed themselves with Moto2 riders which is there for that. it's understandable. but the door isn't close on the other way around. WSBK also benefits from MotoGP riders. Biaggi, Checa and many others. that spices up the series pretty well because WSBK riders can show what they can do against MotoGP riders.
@@jiboo6850 I mean it was when successful wsbk riders went to MotoGP, now it's more that retired MotoGP riders go to wsbk because they no longer have a GP ride
@@jiboo6850 you've said it's good because that's what moto2 is for, but the reason I've said it's not a good thing at the moment is that riders like Rea etc now get overlooked. Obviously doesn't help that Kawasaki aren't in MotoGP, but still. It was a good way for riders that came up through road bikes to get into MotoGP instead of being a MotoGP retirement home. It kind of means that MotoGP doesn't necessarily have all the best riders in the world anymore, as the ones that took an alternate path now get overlooked.
In honor of 22 years, I had to post this and share it with today’s generation. I don’t think they’ve seen close clean racing like this. I privileged to have witnessed when it happened and I continue to watch it and celebrate it regularly. Thank you to Troy and Colin! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The golden season of superbikes (Haga, Corser, Bayliss, Xaus...)

My favorite WSBK race all time! This is what made the RC51 "One liter Ducati eater." Simply awesome!
They ate about 12 of them that race/year.
Same - along with the BSB same year - epic battles in both series
Wow, brings back memories. More please!
The sort of heart stopping racing that Formula 1 would kill to have. Hard fought but with total respect.
